Obituary for John P. Anderson

John P. Anderson
"Mayor of Stobe Avenue," ConEd mechanic, coached Little League John P. Anderson Sr., 79, a retired Consolidated Edison mechanic and longtime Dongan Hills resident, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living in Bethlehem, Pa., where he had resided for the last several months.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mr. Anderson moved to Dongan Hills in 1974. He lived in the same house for 42 years before moving to Bethlehem, Pa., last year.
Mr. Anderson was a mechanic for Con Ed for over 27 years while working in numerous power plants all around New York City.
Mr. Anderson was a big sports fan but loved the Dallas Cowboys. He would often have "friendly debates" with his friends and family over the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys rivalry.
He also enjoyed listening to music, especially Doo Wop and other music from the 1950's and 1960's. Mr. Anderson was an avid reader of newspapers and was knowledgeable about classic cars and enjoyed attending car shows.
He served as a manager and coach at Staten Island Little League for several years. When his team won the championship one year, his son was the catcher, his other son was the bat boy, his brother was one coach and his brother-in-law was another coach.
A parishioner of St. Margaret Mary R.C. Church in Midland Beach, the hardworking individual enjoyed spending his time walking on the South Beach Boardwalk.
Mr. Anderson was an extremely social guy and could be found chatting with total strangers that were standing next to him on lines. He was also known as the "Mayor of Stobe Avenue" because he spent many nights visiting neighbors on the close-knit block.
His wife of 48 years, the former Rose Notaroberto, passed away last May.
Mr. Anderson is survived by two sons, John P. Jr. and Michael; a daughter and sonin-law, Michele and Keith O'Brien; five grandchildren, Bryan and his wife, Kayla, John P. III and Alyssa Anderson, and Nicole and Thomas O'Brien; and one greatgrandson, Jordan Anderson.
Visitation will be held at Colonial Funeral Home on Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 24, at 9:15 a.m., at St. Charles R.C. Church in Oakwood. Burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery, also in Oakwood. Colonial Funeral Home 2819 Hylan Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10306 (718) 351-5858
