Life Story for Mary Shalo

Mary Shalo
Mary Ewanizky Shalo, Daughter of Pazia and John Ewanizky, was born in 1918 and raised in Stapleton. She attended Curtis High School, Baker Business School and Ukranian Classes. Her husband Walter of 44 years, died in 1980 after a long siege of Lou Gehrig's disease. Survivors are several nieces and nephews, which are the children of her brother Theodore and sisters Catherine Boyle and Helen Lepardo, all deceased.

Mary was a coordinator for the Kindernook, which consisted of watching children while their mothers visited their doctors. At the time, she received an achievement award at the Waldorf Astoria from the United Hospital Fund in appreciation for her hours of volunteering. In May 2004, Mary received the "Dr. Norbert H. Leesberg Humanitarian Award." She was selected from among 900 volunteers on Staten Island associated with RSVP.

Her concern for the community over several decades, Mrs. Shalo logged thousands of hours as a volunteer with RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, with the auxiliary of the former Bayley Seton Hospital in Clifton, the former St. Vincent's Medical Center, West Brighton, and the Auxiliary of the former St. Elizabeth Ann Nursing Home. Sh'e an amazing woman, an outstanding volunteer and she's always working to help better the community.

Mary has also volunteered at the Swedish Adult for the Aging, Salvation Army, the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, the Police Dept. at 122 Precinct, Cancer, Light of the Night, Alice Austen Museum, Staten Island Zoo, Ladies of Charity, Golden Oldies Bowling League, NAIM, and many many more. Over the years, Mary has undertaken many jobs both as an Auxilian and volunteer and has always been a great pleasure to work with due to her willingness to do whatever is asked of her. She truly personifies a Lady of Charity and a true daughter of St. Vincent de Paul; quoted by the late Mary Frances Romeo, President-Auxiliary of Bayley Seton. Mary had many hobbies but her priority was collecting postage stamps for the handicap Veterans in hospitals. She retired from Howland Hook Containersip where she was the secretary tot he Office Manager for many years. Mary led a very dedicated and interesting life and spent over 10,000 hours in helping and contributing her time in whatever way she could in order to help humanity. She was a true humanitarian.
